Employment Training Panel Approves $4M to Train California Workers

SACRAMENTO The California Labor and Workforce Development Agencys Employment Training Panel (ETP) approved $4,013,066 in special job training funds at its meeting today to upgrade the skills of thousands of California workers in the sectors of green/clean manufacturing and technology, and alternative and renewable fuel and new vehicle technology.

A total of 13 projects were approved for funding, eight of which support the High-Wage High-Skill Training Program funded by the Governors 15% Discretionary Funds, totaling $2,198,766. The remaining five projects, totaling $1,814,300, support the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program created under the AB 118 Program, which is administered and funded by the California Energy Commission.

Nearly 2,400 California workers will benefit directly from todays ETP approved projects, which include new hire training as well as training of existing workers, said ETP executive director Brian McMahon. We are particularly pleased to be partnering with the California Energy Commission to further the workforce development goals of the AB 118 program. The training agreements will help foster Californias alternative fuel and new vehicle industries, furthering Governor Schwarzeneggers goals for the state as a leader in these emerging sectors.

The approved projects are representative of business contractors, labor organizations, and community colleges throughout the state. The group includes, Bakersfield based KS Industries, which proposes to retrain over 200 of its workers, providing up-to-date skills in the solar and wind energy industry. Southern California Painting & Drywall Apprenticeship Training Trust, whose contract covers 12 counties, proposes to train approximately 250 apprentices and journey level painters and drywall finishers in new techniques and technology. Northern Californias AB 118 contract award recipient, Electric Vehicles International, will use its funds to train 100 new workers in commercial skills related to manufacturing of and conversion to electric vehicles.
