WINTER PREPAREDNESS

November 14, 2024

Preparedness Newsletter
Ross Valley Fire Department

November, 2009

Dear Resident,

The Holidays are here again! Also here again is flu season.  This year the big concern is not just seasonal flu, but the H1N1 virus.  The Marin County Health and Human Services is taking the lead in vaccinations and public information and they are doing a great job.  For all of the information on H1N1 and local vaccination clinics, go to marinflu.org

 Get Ready Disaster Preparedness

Get Ready classes have been scheduled through November and as always, if you would like a special class for your group, HOA, school, etc, please give me a call or send me an email. [email protected]

Changed your clocks back?  Now it's time to change your Smoke Alarm (Detector) batteries.

The change of season, local fires, and a new time change has us all thinking about fire safety.  If you're a little unsure about what you should be doing at home, here are a few tips:

1. Change the smoke alarm batteries, this is you first line of defense, especially while we are asleep!

2. Test the smoke alarm. This can also help you and other household members to review your planWhat do we do if this alarm goes off?. Ways to get out, stay low in smoke. Meeting places out front if we go out different exits. These can be fun drills for children

3. Check and/or have your fire extinguisher checked. Do you know where it is? Is it hung up? Is the gauge pointing toward full? Can you turn it upside down and hear the powder? Does everyone know how to use it. PASS. Pull the pin. Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire. Squeeze the handles. Sweep back and forth to extinguish.

4. Check you emergency supplies. Change your water, check your foods, and check the batteries for flashlights and radios.

Shorten Response Time to Your Home

You can help to shorten response time to your home by displaying easy-to read house numbers on your home. A minimum of 4 inch lettering, easily readable from the street and contrasting background. Reflective and or illuminated would be a plus for us shaving valuable time off an emergency response. Do not rely on street/curb numbers. All too often cars or other vehicles obstruct these from view, when seconds count!

Winter Weather is here!

The rains have started and it's said we are due for an El Nino this season. Inclement weather brings with it a host of situations that we can all be properly prepared for with a little advance planning and preparations. For information and tips on preparing for floods, filling and placing sandbags in advance of storms, and other helpful information for being better prepared for the winter weather, refer to page 38 of your Get Ready manual. If you don't have a manual, you can download it at:  http://www.getreadyrossvalley.org/
