You're Invited: Small Biz Program on Greening for Profit

Greening for Profits
Easy Steps. Bottom Line Results.

A collaborative four-month program to help San Rafaels small businesses implement sustainability, save money and improve profitability.

Overview:
The City of San Rafael has teamed with Natural Capitalism Solutions, a world-renowned non-profit sustainability group, and Dominican University to provide the new Greening for Profits program. Sustainable Profits is a proven model that will help the local business community implement sustainable business practices that drive profitability.

During the four-month program, 8 local companies will participate in four full days of training. Curriculum includes practical information in six technical areas (Lighting, Heating and Cooling, Office Equipment, Water, Waste, Travel and Transit), as well as strategic guidance in six business areas (Branding, Employee Engagement, Change Management, Financing, Customer/Stakeholder Engagement, Purchasing).

During this time, each company will receive guidance from an expert coach in creating an action plan. Action plans are designed to drive savings through the implementation of specific sustainability measures. Each companys plan will be different and based upon company-specific goals. Action plans are comprised of specific implementation measures and include time frames and return on investment for each individual measure.

Each of the four sessions are held at a different business location. This allows the Coach to guide the group in a walk-through of that businesss facility. Each walk-through is focused on a specific area of implementation, such as water, heating and cooling, etc., providing real-world context for the participants.

Program Detail
Who attends?
Each company is invited to bring two individuals into sessions.
Sponsor Company President or other Executive who has the authority to champion sustainability initiatives.
Team Leader Employee who is empowered to implement sustainability measures.

Sustainability Action Plan: Each organization creates a detailed sustainability action plan. Action plans include specific implementation measures, time frames, costs and ROI associated with each measure.

Content and Delivery: Curriculum for the course covers six key technical areas: Lighting, Heating and Cooling, Office Equipment, Water, Waste, Travel and Transit. In each section of the course, specific measures in the key areas are covered (eg. in the lighting section, measures include task lighting, turning off lights and installing daylight sensors among others). ROI, implementation costs, and savings are covered each step of the way.

The expert Coach will also present content and provide strategic guidance in six business areas: Branding, Employee Engagement, Change Management, Financing, Customer/Stakeholder Engagement, Purchasing.
Each session uses a variety of content delivery methods, including presentations, group exercises, small group break outs and facility walk-throughs in order to maximize engagement and minimize one-way presentation. Local content experts will also be brought in to provide local context and different perspectives.

Implementation Tools:
Solutions @ the Speed of Business: Program participants will have access to NCSs sophisticated online implementation tool called Solutions @ the Speed of Business (S@SB). S@SB provides implementation tools like pre-written surveys and signage, along with step-by-step action plans for recommended sustainability measures. The tool also includes videos and interactive flash exercises to demonstrate the business case for implementing each sustainability measure. Participants can choose two of six modules (Lighting, Heating & Cooling, Office Equipment, Water, Waste, Travel & Transportation).

Additional tools and resources include:

  • Access to related local programs
  • Local rebate and financing information

Peer Network: Program participants collaborate with each other sharing challenges, best practices, and ideas for innovation. Over the four-month period, a powerful peer community develops. This community and the associated learning provide some of the most valuable take-aways from the program.
